Glue sticks for school, from Elmer's purple to UHU

Our recommendations

Easiest coverage to see

Elmer's Disappearing Purple School Glue Sticks

The purple is the whole point. Missed edges and thick globs are obvious before the glue turns clear.

Worth knowing.

• You can see exactly where the glue went, and the purple fades as it dries.
• Plain water gets it out of most clothes.
• The skinny stick suits small hands, so kids don’t have to press hard.

Washable classroom pick

Scotch Smart Washable Glue Sticks

Scotch is the washable option with the most control over how much glue comes out.

Worth knowing.

• Paper stops sliding almost as soon as it’s pressed down.
• Comes off fabric and skin with washing.
• The base clicks up in small increments, which stops over-twisting.

Larger craft stick

UHU Stic Glue Stick

Buy UHU when a small school stick would be used up halfway through the project.

Worth knowing.

• Acid-free glue won’t yellow photos or keepsake pages over time.
• The wide barrel is easy to grip and turns smoothly.
• It stays flexible once dry instead of cracking.

Avery Glue Stic 00171

Avery is small and dries clear. Good in a backpack, but it’s for modest paper jobs.

Worth knowing.

• The bond is permanent, which suits display boards and anything that goes into storage.
• Small enough to disappear into a pencil case.
• The cap snaps on firmly, so it doesn’t dry out in a backpack.

How I narrowed it down

Most of what separates these four is printed on the package, so that’s where we started: color, washability, size and what the glue is meant to hold. Teacher threads filled in what packaging won’t tell you, like how fast a soft stick gets mashed down.

• Checked Elmer’s purple-then-clear color change and its washability claim against the retail packaging.
• Scotch Smart Stick: confirmed the washable, non-toxic label and the clicking twist-up base on its product page.
• UHU’s listing states acid-free, solvent-free and clear-drying, which is what matters for photo books.
• Avery 00171 is sold as a permanent bond in a 0.26 oz stick. We checked both.
• Searched the CPSC recall database for adhesive and school-supply recalls tied to these four brands.

I'm Matt, a dad of two boys. If we've used something at home, the card says personally tested. The rest I read up on. I keep a weekly list of kids' product recalls. How I pick.
