Paint sticks: Kwik Stix, OOLY Chunkies and PlayColor

Our recommendations

Quick-drying coverage

Kwik Stix Solid Tempera Paint 12-Color Set

Big cardboard or window projects that need to dry fast are where the twelve-color Kwik Stix set makes sense.

Keep the removable caps away from children under three.

Worth knowing.

• Kwik Stix dries in about 90 seconds, so less of it ends up on sleeves and the tabletop.
• With a tube this thick, preschoolers get broad strokes without pressing hard.
• Wood, cardboard and windows take it as well as paper.

Jumbo preschool grip

OOLY Chunkies Paint Sticks

The wide Chunkies barrels sit comfortably in preschool hands and lay down broad strokes. Detailed drawing is hard with them.

Worth knowing.

• The jumbo barrel fills a small palm, so long sessions wear little hands out less.
• Color goes down like lipstick, with no drag on the paper.
• You can stack finished pages soon after without them sticking together.

Compact school-grade pigment

PlayColor Solid Tempera Paint Sticks

PlayColor fits twelve bright sticks in a small box. It’s a better match for older kids and the travel art bin.

Worth knowing.

• Concentrated pigment shows up bright on dark paper as well as light.
• Slim sticks fit a standard pencil box or travel kit.
• There’s no brush or water cup, so it works at a restaurant table or in the car.

How I narrowed it down

Paint sticks swap brush-washing for caps and twist-up barrels, and the marks they make are broad, more like crayon than paint. Most of the ranking came down to how thick the barrel is and how quickly the paint dries. Listings rarely cover color payoff or mess, so parent comments on r/toddlers filled those gaps.

• Kwik Stix and PlayColor: checked the retailer listings for age guidance, dimensions and non-toxic labels.
• Read the OOLY and Little Brian product pages for barrel diameter, color count and how the twist-up works.
• Went through each product’s washability claim, drying-time estimate and recommended cleanup.
• Checked current package dimensions and color counts on the Walmart, OOLY, Chalkstore and Amazon pages.
