Our oldest tried the National Geographic jumbo dinosaur egg and ten geodes. One was a long dig; the other needed my own tools to open cleanly.

I took over the hard part and used my adult chisel and hammer to open ours cleanly. These are real rocks with uncertain insides, which is the appeal if your kid likes minerals.

Common questions

Which kit is less messy?

The egg crumbled onto our cookie sheet. I did not compare cleanup times; with the geodes, I would clear a space for rock chips before using a hammer.

Are the crystal colors inside guaranteed?

A sealed geode is a surprise. The opened one in our illustration does not tell you what a particular rock will look like inside.

Is the T. Rex tooth a real fossil?

The current Jumbo Dinosaur Egg listing calls it a replica T. Rex tooth. The small dinosaur figures and that replica are the discoveries in this kit.

Can a younger child use either kit?

Both current listings say ages 8 and up, so I would follow the age label on the box. CPSC says to keep the small dinosaur figures away from children under three.

Before you buy

  • What the kid uncovers: The geodes hold natural crystals you cannot predict from the box. The molded egg hides dinosaur figures and a replica tooth.
  • One egg or ten separate rocks: Ten separate rocks can be opened on different days. The dinosaur set is one large egg, so a child works toward one finish.
  • Work surface and cleanup: The cookie sheet contained crumbs from our egg. Breaking real rocks can scatter chips, so clear a work area before opening geodes.
  • Any product: check current recall information before buying — the kids' product recall tracker lists recent CPSC recalls of children's products.
