The step stools we use for handwashing and kitchen help

Three stools we've actually used: a fixed bathroom pair, a folding two-step for kitchen help, and a purple folding stool that pinched little fingers.

Quick answer

For our sink and toilet, the gray iLove two-step pair has been the most useful. Our Delxo helped with cooking, but both folding stools have pinched little fingers. I would leave opening and closing them to an adult. Use any stool on a clean, dry, level floor with an adult close by.

Folding stools and little fingers

Our Delxo has been useful when the kids help cook. They sometimes open it before school to get cereal. That is something they do, not something I recommend leaving them to do.

  • The Delxo has pinched fingers on occasion, and our child finds it hard to fold. An adult should open and close it, keep children’s hands away from the joints, and check that it is fully open before use. Keep it out of reach when you cannot supervise.
  • The purple Handy Laundry stool was only okay for us. It sometimes pinched the kids’ hands badly enough that they cried. I would not buy it as their everyday stool.
  • Before cooking together, move hot pans, knives and anything the child could pull down out of reach.

Before you buy

  • Reach at your sink: Measure your sink and check where your child needs to stand to reach the water without leaning. A shorter one-step stool may suit a taller child, but check the product height against your own sink.
  • Folding and pinches: Our folding stools have pinched the kids’ hands during use.
  • Space beside the toilet or counter: Your child needs room to climb up and step down without squeezing past furniture.
  • Any product: check current recall information before buying — the kids' product recall tracker lists recent CPSC recalls of children's products.

Safety and recalls

  • Guidecraft Classic Kitchen Helper: CPSC recall 26-490 covers certain Classic and Contemporary towers sold June 2022 to October 2023, because the platform can loosen or detach. Look at the item number and the lot number on the sticker under the platform. If both match the notice, stop using it and ask Guidecraft for free repair parts. CPSC

How I narrowed it down

We own the gray iLove two-pack, the Delxo aluminum woodgrain two-step folding stool and the purple Handy Laundry folding stool. My comments about those three come from using them with our kids. I have not used the other stools below. Their details come from product pages and the linked sources. The iLove scene shows one stool from our two-pack; it was made from a product photo, not taken in our bathroom.

  • Matched the gray iLove two-pack to B072WFPSDK and the owner-confirmed purchase inventory.
  • Kept our Delxo and Handy Laundry observations separate from the researched alternatives.
  • Checked the current Guidecraft listing and the CPSC recall notice. The listing now starts at 18 months and says the tower folds for storage.

I'm Matt, a dad of two boys. If we've used something at home, the card says personally tested. The rest I read up on. I keep a weekly list of kids' product recalls. How I pick.
