Bentgo Kids Chill Lunch Box
Bentgo boxes have come with us from child care into first grade. Our Chill is easy to use and fits in the backpack easily, and after more than three years it hasn’t leaked or had any other problem. We rotate several, and they’ve done fine in our dishwasher.

PlanetBox Rover Stainless Steel Lunch Box Set
We moved up to the Rover after the Bentgo. It’s a little bigger, and it’s been easy to use and works well for us. Our son puts dinosaur magnets on the lid and likes his yogurt in the small lidded containers. It goes in the dishwasher easily. The catch is all the extra containers and pieces.

Yumbox Panino, Surf Shark Blue
If lunch is a sandwich or a wrap with dry sides, the Panino is the box built for it. For hot food or anything runny, pick one of the others.

OmieBox, Blue Sky
The OmieBox is for kids old enough to open the thermos who eat warm lunches. If backpack weight or dishwasher cleanup matters to you, one of the others is better.

- Reddit owners keep reaching the same conclusion. It’s worth the price only if hot food is a regular thing, or it’s an expensive bento with a thermos that never gets used
- The removable vacuum-insulated thermos keeps soup, pasta or leftovers warm until lunch. Capacity differs by version, so check the listing
- Hot and cold in one box. There are three compartments, and a movable divider makes a fourth

Common questions
Can the Bentgo Kids Chill go in the dishwasher?
Bentgo says the removable food tray can go on the top rack and recommends hand-washing the outer shell and ice pack. What we do is different. We take the tray out and run both the tray and the outer shell through the dishwasher on the regular setting, and that’s worked fine. The ice pack gets hand-washed and goes back in the freezer. That’s our routine, not Bentgo’s recommendation.
What features should I look for in a kids lunch box for school?
Start with whether your kid can open it alone. At the cafeteria table, a box they can’t get into means waiting for a teacher. Then read what the leakproof claim actually covers, since it differs by food. After that, check the care instructions against your routine and look at the layout against what your kid really eats. Last, think about the weight with food inside.
What is the best lunch box for kids?
Ours is the Bentgo Kids Chill. It has four compartments and a removable ice pack under the tray, it fits our first-grader’s backpack easily, and it’s lasted more than three years without a leak. We also use the PlanetBox Rover, the bigger stainless box, which means more pieces to wash. The Yumbox Panino (for sandwiches) and OmieBox (for hot food) are researched alternatives.
How I narrowed it down
We’ve used the Bentgo Kids Chill and the PlanetBox Rover ourselves. The hero photo and Bentgo photos are ours. The Rover image is a product reference, not our own box. Yumbox and OmieBox are researched. Our own notes are kept apart from maker instructions and other families’ reports.
- Matched the four-compartment box, and the ice pack under the tray that we confirmed on our own, to the Bentgo Kids Chill model.
- Our Rover yogurt goes in small lidded containers, never loose in a main compartment, and the page says so.
- Lined up food layout, how each opens, materials and empty weight for all four.
- Kept the makers’ care instructions apart from how our family actually cleans the boxes.
- Checked the current Bentgo product page, the model-specific Amazon listing and the same-day CPSC recall export.
I'm Matt, a dad of two boys. If we've used something at home, the card says personally tested. The rest I read up on. I keep a weekly list of kids' product recalls. How I pick.
