Kids gardening tools for pots, beds and real digging

My boys planted flowers and dug holes in our yard with the Toysmith hand tools. Their favorite was the mint shovel, which has stayed sturdy.

Quick answer

For planting in pots or loose garden soil, I’d start with Toysmith’s short hand tools. The JustForKids Garden Tool Set has four longer tools for digging and raking while standing up. Each tool is 27.5 inches long, so give your child room to work without bumping anyone nearby. Both sets are listed for ages 5 and up. Born Toys adds an apron and hat to its hand tools for ages 3–7. Digz is an option if you only need gloves. We used the Toysmith tools in our yard; I researched the other three.

Best hand-tool set

Toysmith Beetle & Bee Kids Garden Hand Tools

Toysmith’s short tools are made for careful planting close to the soil. In pots they beat long handles, but gloves and a watering can still have to come from somewhere else.

Toysmith lists ages 5+. Use with adult supervision; check metal edges and handle joints before use, and follow the package’s small-parts warning. Toysmith

What our boys did with the Toysmith tools

Both of my boys used these in our garden. I was always out in the yard with them, probably doing yard work myself. The mint shovel was the favorite for digging holes and making monster-truck tracks. They helped plant small heather bushes and flowers, too, and dug one hole I later tripped over. The shovel has stayed sturdy. We keep the set in the garage.

  • Toysmith labels the hand-tool set for ages 5 and up. Follow that guidance when choosing a set.
  • Fill holes after digging so nobody trips over them.
  • JustForKids’ long handles need room around other people. Born Toys adds an apron and hat; Digz is the glove option. Those three are researched alternatives.

Common questions

What tools are best for kids starting gardening?

A hand trowel, a hand rake, gloves that fit and a light watering can. For pots and raised beds, short tools like the Toysmith set are easier to control. Kids 5 and older who want to work standing up in a garden bed can handle the 27.5-inch JustForKids set.

What should I look for in a kids gardening tool set?

Look at handle length first, then what the heads are made of and how they attach. Check the included pieces and the maker’s age guidance. Before anyone digs, go over each tool for burrs, splinters, loose rivets or screws, chipping paint and wobbly handle joints.

What age can kids start using gardening tools?

The youngest rating here is 3 and older, for the Born Toys wearable kit, which is meant for light planting, watering and pretend play. Toysmith’s hand tools and the JustForKids long-handled set are both listed for 5 and older. With toddlers, skip small parts and long straps or cords, and stay close for any digging.

What are kids' gardening tools made of?

JustForKids and Toysmith both use metal heads. JustForKids’ tools are hard metal, and Toysmith puts painted metal heads on short wooden handles. Owners push metal over plastic because plastic heads don’t really dig or rake, and kids notice. The Digz gloves have a nitrile-coated palm and a breathable mesh back.

Before you buy

  • Handle length and control: Leverage comes from handle length. JustForKids’ 27.5-inch tools let many grade-school kids dig standing up, but that reach knocks into pots and raised beds and can catch someone standing nearby.
  • Tool-head material and attachment: Owners push metal because plastic heads won’t really dig. A metal head can still sit on a loose joint, though, and JustForKids’ detachable handles need checking before use.
  • Included pieces and task coverage: What’s in the box decides what a kid can do. JustForKids’ four long tools can rake and hoe; Born Toys gives up digging power in exchange for an apron, hat and spray bottle.
  • Any product: check current recall information before buying — the kids' product recall tracker lists recent CPSC recalls of children's products.

How I narrowed it down

My Toysmith notes come from both boys using the set in our garden. For the other three picks, I checked published construction, included pieces and fit details, along with owner reports. The pictures are product-reference scenes, not photos of our garden.

  • Read the listing for the exact set you’re ordering and confirm what the tools are made of, how long the handles are and what’s in the box
  • Go over every tool before it goes in the dirt, checking for burrs, splinters, loose rivets or screws and paint that’s starting to chip
  • Check CPSC and the manufacturer for recalls or safety notices before you buy
  • Toddlers shouldn’t get small parts or long straps and cords, so buy for the child’s age
  • Rinse the tools and dry them before storage, since damp metal rusts and gets rough edges

I'm Matt, a dad of two boys. If we've used something at home, the card says personally tested. The rest I read up on. I keep a weekly list of kids' product recalls. How I pick.
