Our recommendations

MAGNA-TILES Classic 100-Piece Set
A first big set that should still be coming out of the bin years from now, with riveted corners parents trust around toddlers. The magnets are only moderate, so very tall towers fall sooner than Connetix builds, and the list price is about three times PicassoTiles’.
Check priceWorth knowing.
- Long-term owners describe daily play from the toddler years into elementary school without a cracked tile or loose magnet
- Full retail is the complaint owners repeat most. Many say to wait for a sale or buy secondhand
- The 100 pieces break down as 50 small squares, 4 large squares and 46 triangles in three styles

CONNETIX Rainbow Creative Pack 102 pc
Connetix makes sense once a kid is deep into tile building and tired of towers that topple. As a first set, its higher price per tile is harder to justify than Magna-Tiles or PicassoTiles.
Check priceWorth knowing.
- Owners note the themed add-ons (cars, animals, cranes) are thinner than Magna-Tiles’ catalog. The ball run is the exception
- The magnets are stronger than standard tiles, so multi-level builds and tall towers hold together
- Connetix’s beveled tiles look clearer and resist surface scratches

PicassoTiles Classic Starter Set 100 Pieces
PicassoTiles puts the most tiles on the floor for the money, and many owners say they play just like Magna-Tiles. The trade is weaker magnets, which matters for a kid who quits when a tower collapses.
Check priceWorth knowing.
- Some long-term owners report three-plus years of hard play without a cracked tile or loose magnet
- Owners split on durability. Many go years without a break, but cracked tiles during a rough smashing phase come up often enough that you should check the pieces now and then
- 100 pieces in five shapes, 8 of them large squares, for about $40 direct from PicassoTiles

Tegu 42-Piece Set Magnetic Wooden Blocks
Tegu is the wooden pick, safety tested for ages 1+ and made to last for years. Per piece it costs far more than plastic tiles, so builds stay small unless you add sets.
Check priceWorth knowing.
- In homes that own both, owners say kids tend to grab the flat tiles over the wooden blocks
- Sustainably sourced hardwood, non-toxic water-based finishes, made in Honduras
- Safety tested for ages 1+. The magnets are fully enclosed and the standard sets have no small parts

MAGNA-TILES microMAGS Travel 26-Piece Set
microMAGS keeps tile play contained at a restaurant table or on a trip, and the metal case doubles as a base. Back home, standard-size tiles build bigger and are harder to lose.

How I narrowed it down
- Recorded each set’s published age grade, from Tegu’s 1+ to the 3+ tile sets, and which systems it connects to.
- Went through owner threads for problems that show up later, like tiles cracking during a rough smashing phase, sets that are a pain to clean up, and kids who lose interest.
- Magna-Tiles, Connetix, PicassoTiles and Tegu: set the published contents lists side by side and flagged packs whose contents changed between versions.
I'm Matt, a dad of two boys. If we've used something at home, the card says personally tested. The rest I read up on. I keep a weekly list of kids' product recalls. How I pick.
