Lands End Squall Parka
The Squall’s thumbhole cuffs and Grow-A-Long sleeves do different jobs. The fleece-lined cuffs cover the wrists, with an outer cuff you can adjust. Grow-A-Long adds up to 1.5 inches to the sleeve length as a kid grows. There’s an exception for the smallest coat: XXS has plain elastic cuffs, so that version won’t give you the adjustable thumbhole setup.

- Front pockets open from both the top and side; a separate pocket sits inside the coat.
- The hood adjusts, too. The parka is insulated, although Lands’ End doesn’t give a fill weight on the current product page.
- Extra sleeve length won’t help once the shoulders or body are too tight. I wouldn’t include a second winter in the budget until the coat makes it there.

Columbia Mighty Mogul Jacket
The Mighty Mogul III has a goggle pocket and a separate ski-pass pocket, plus a helmet-compatible hood. Inside the waist is a powder skirt, meant to keep snow from coming up under the jacket. Columbia uses silicone grippers to keep that skirt in place. I’m less keen on it for a long uphill walk. The fabric is described as breathable, but there are no vent zippers to open when a kid heats up.

- Columbia specifies 150-gram synthetic insulation and an Omni-Heat Infinity reflective lining. Outgrown cuffs let you add sleeve length later.
- Sizes run from XXS (4/5) to XL (18). That XXS starts above Lands’ End’s XXS, labeled 2–3.
- Columbia seals the critical seams only. The jacket doesn’t have sealing at every sewn joint.

The North Face Kids Reversible Perrito Insulated Hooded Jacket
The Perrito belongs on a shorter shopping list: little kids, sizes 2T through 7, in mostly dry weather. It’s the only coat here I would leave out of a wet-weather wardrobe unless a separate waterproof layer was already part of the plan.

How I narrowed it down
- My boys haven’t worn any of these three coats. I compared the published specifications and checked the manufacturer pages on November 2, 2026. The retailer’s Perrito style number matches the maker’s NF0A88VJ.
- The recommendations separate a school parka, a ski jacket and a reversible little-kid coat. I don’t have wear tests or temperature measurements for them, so the order is about their intended jobs, not a warmest-coat ranking.
- I used verified maker or retailer product photos as references for the AI-restaged images. The scenes don’t show our family’s coats or home.
I'm Matt, a dad of two boys. If we've used something at home, the card says personally tested. The rest I read up on. I keep a weekly list of kids' product recalls. How I pick.
