Kids rain jackets for drizzly school days

One-piece coverage for muddy play, a seam-sealed Columbia jacket for longer rain, and a lighter Glennaker for short drizzles.

Quick answer

Decide how wet the day gets. Oaki’s Black Trail Suit covers the waist and legs and lists sizes starting at 12M, but a bathroom break means peeling off a whole suit. Columbia’s boys’ jackets start at 4/5: Watertight has fully sealed seams, while Glennaker is labeled water-resistant for lighter rain.

Best full-coverage pick

Oaki Trail Rain Suit

Oaki’s Black Trail Suit covers far more than a jacket on a muddy daycare day. Check the torso and inseam measurements with the layers your child will wear; the maker lists garment measurements, not body measurements.

Light-rain layer

Columbia Glennaker Rain Jacket

Glennaker is the lighter rain choice. Columbia labels it water-resistant and lists an attached hood and elastic cuffs; choose a fully seam-sealed shell if the walk or recess will stay wet.

For steady rain

Columbia Kids Watertight II Jacket

Watertight II is the Columbia choice when rain persists. Its exterior zipper flap, fully sealed seams and cuff adjustments are listed by the maker; the shell has no insulation for cold days.

What our boys wore

Both boys wore our yellow Tuffo Muddy Buddy for puddle play at Kerry Park. It kept them pretty dry, but pulling the legs over boots took work, and that fabric crinkled every time they moved. The boys loved the puddles anyway. That is why I care about how quickly rain gear goes on, not just how much it covers.

  • Tuffo is a different rain suit from the Black Oaki pick above. Our experience with Tuffo does not establish Oaki’s fit, waterproofing or durability.
  • We have not confirmed family use of the Glennaker or Watertight II shown here. Their card details come from Columbia’s exact style pages.

Common questions

Is a rain suit or a jacket better for a toddler?

For a child sitting in puddles, a one-piece keeps the waist covered; Oaki lists its Black Trail Suit from 12M upward and says its seams are taped. It also takes more work to get on and off. The two Columbia jackets reviewed here are boys’ styles whose listed sizes start at 4/5, so they are not substitutes for a 2T suit.

How do I choose between the Glennaker and Watertight II?

Columbia labels Glennaker water-resistant for light rain. Watertight II is its waterproof option with fully sealed seams, a mesh lining, adjustable cuffs and a hood tab. Check the size and hood over your child’s usual layers; neither jacket covers pants or boots.

Before you buy

  • Coverage when a kid sits down: A jacket leaves the waist and legs to separate rain pants. A one-piece keeps that gap covered but is harder to remove for a bathroom break.
  • The maker’s actual rain label: Glennaker is labeled water-resistant. Watertight II has fully sealed seams, while Oaki lists taped seams on its Black Trail Suit.
  • Size and closure details: Oaki lists sizes from 12M. The specific Columbia boys’ jackets shown here start at 4/5; Watertight also has cuff and hood adjustments.
  • Any product: check current recall information before buying — the kids' product recall tracker lists recent CPSC recalls of children's products.

How I narrowed it down

  • Oaki’s Black Trail Suit page lists taped seams, neoprene ankle cuffs and sizes from 12M; I used its exact Black page, not the old Orange source.
  • Columbia labels the Glennaker water-resistant and the Watertight II waterproof with fully sealed seams. Both boys’ listings begin at 4/5.
  • Used our family’s Tuffo experience only to weigh the hassle of getting into a one-piece; it is not an Oaki test.

I'm Matt, a dad of two boys. If we've used something at home, the card says personally tested. The rest I read up on. I keep a weekly list of kids' product recalls. How I pick.
